When we got to site it was difficult to see the wood for the trees...
... but in normal WRG style we headed straight into the thickest bits ...
.... and soon we had areas cleared to enable bonfires to be sited.
The Middle lock before we started
I wasn't at the dig for the Saturday but arrived in time for the evening festivities! The theme for the evening was 'Star Trek' which meant that you could be sitting next to a strange characters for the meal!
A group shot of the party goers who had braved to dress up.
One of the tasks after the meal was to make a model of a Star Ship ...
... one group didn't take this too seriously ...
... whilst another produced a work of art.
Another task was to dress a member of your group as a Star Trek character, the not-taking-it-too-seriously group managed to win with this one! - guess which character this is.
The evening was rounded off with some (very) late night community singing
A not too late start the next morning saw the bonfires re-lit ...
... some more successfully than others!
Ed takes things gently
The site is just outside Chippenham at the location of Pewsham locks ...
... this is the middle one of the three locks, one wall is complete(ish) but the nearside wall has completely disappeared. The other two locks will have to be almost completely re-built.
Next to the middle lock is the remains of a dry dock ...
,,, and below the bottom lock are the remains of a spill wier that has been completely enclosed by tree roots.
More archaeology - this is the remains of a suspected saw pit adjacent to the top lock.

Moose's gazebo came in useful at luchtime as there was a near gale for most of Sunday
Some found it all a bit much!...
.... but back to work we went.
Late afternoon saw the site being tidied up ...
... and the fires gathered in. All in all a very successful dig on an interesting new site.
